Description Discover the fundamentals of good quality music teaching for 5-7 year-olds... An Introduction to Teaching Music at KS1 offers you a prime opportunity to learn effective ways of delivering curriculum music, through the use of simple songs, rhymes and games. And there’s a BIG bonus: you don’t need previous music experience or music reading skills to take part! This practical half-day course will explore KS1 musical skills and concepts from The Voices Foundation’s perspective, within the context of the new National Curriculum for Music. Attendees will also receive a personal copy of the KS1 handbook and CD from the charity's popular Inside Music series of teaching resources, to support them during the CPD session and afterwards in school. Course learning outcomes

Participants will:

  • develop basic music skills, knowledge and understanding
     
  • have a collection of songs and games for music sessions
     
  • be able to teach songs using appropriate pitches and teaching techniques
     
  • gain an understanding of the progressive nature of music education, and how this can be delivered by class teachers
     
  • have an understanding of how musical skills and concepts can enhance other areas of learning for children

Course content

Course leader Carole Kendall - Senior Advisory Teacher with The Voices Foundation - will guide participants through the following topics:

  • Teaching a song
     
  • Helping children to find their Singing Voices - group and individual pitch matching
     
  • Finding and using the Thinking Voice
     
  • Exploring vocal and instrumental timbre
     
  • Identifying the 3 comparatives (higher/lower pitch, faster/slower tempo, louder/quieter dynamics)
     
  • Exploring musical elements such as phrase,rhythm, pulse
     
  • Listening to recorded music with purpose 
     

​To consolidate course outcomes, and to provide support back in the classroom, participants will receive their own copy of First Steps: Age 5-7, the first handbook for teachers in The Voices Foundation's popular new Inside Music resource series.  This full-colour, user-friendly teaching guide, complete with a CD containing audio tracks of all songs featured and listening material to use in class sessions, will inspire and encourage them as they put their newly gained skills into practice. 

The course will run from 1:30pm to 4:30pm on Friday 9 January 2015: application deadline is Friday 15 December 2014.
