Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students

This course is ideal for class teachers wishing to explore practical activities and teaching approached that lead to deep learning of year group specific learning objectives and mastery of key mathematical concepts. Approaches to teaching reasoning skills to the whole class and challenging all children will be central to each course.

The course will demonstrate how the approach to mastery can be implemented for all children regardless of ability in the daily mathematics lesson and their objectives are:

  • To develop knowledge of how children ‘master’ the important mathematical concepts in a particular year group;
  • To explore the use of a wide range of models and images to give children a deeper understanding of the key concepts in a particular year group;
  • To consider how to identify when children have mastered a concept; and
  • To consider different definitions of ‘mastery’ and exemplify these through selected high quality, practical activities.

Those attending will take three key mathematical concepts and explore deep learning opportunities for each concept, exemplifying through high quality activities that can be used straight away in the classroom. They will also exemplify how evidence of deeper and broader learning can be identified for able children before accelerating to higher age group content.

This course will explore:

  • Developing a deep understanding of written calculation methods necessary to cope with the 'reasoning' aspect of the new 2016 tests;
  • Deep understanding of number properties, such as primes, factors, multiplies, squares, and triangular numbers in a problem solving context; and
  • Developing strong reasoning and generalising skills in pattern work leading to algebraic notation.  Essential preparation for the Y6 algebra curriculum.
