The session covers legal requirements specific to academies, those which both academies and maintained schools must comply with, academy freedoms and some features of governance best practice in all sectors. There is a specific focus on how the governing body can consider its freedoms and ensure that it works strategically, leaving operational business to school leaders.

This course draws on NGA's expertise in governance policy and practice. It is delivered highly experienced consultants with strong backgrounds in governance and education. 

How users/participants can evaluate success

Following the course, academy governors should be well placed to ensure their governing body is effective and making a positive contribution to the success of their academy.

Follow-up activities and support

The NGA offer a range of support, advice, and training services which can be used to follow-up or complement this course.


This is a two hour session which can be delivered to the whole governing body at a time and place to suit. Prior to the session, the consultant will liaise with the Chair of Governors and Headteacher to ensure that the content properly reflects the governing body's responsibilities as defined by the academy trust.
