Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students

This Advanced course extends participants' knowledge and skills. It is advised that those who apply for this course should have completed the Basic course prior to booking and the Designated Child Protection Officers should undertake this course every two years.

The aims of the course are to ensure that all participants:

  • Develop an advanced understanding of Child Protection issues.
  • Increased opportunities to explore attitudes and values with regard to safeguarding children.
  • Refresh and enhance their knowledge of signs and symptoms of abuse.
  • Understand that although it is plausible for child care practitioners to predict the likelihood of certain children being abused, more robust evidence is needed.
  • Understand that some children are resilient to abuse i.e. they see this as 'normal' behaviour.
  • Gain knowledge and skills needed to perform the function of 'Designated Person' or 'Child Protection Officer' in their setting.
  • Receive information about Child Protection processes, including Child Protection conferences.
  • Identify good practice in working with children and families, and reflect on their setting's policies and procedures.

How users/participants can evaluate success

This course will equip deleagtes with the skills necessary to carry out the role of Designated Safeguarding Officer within their setting. Delegates will be given the skills and resources to ensure that Child Protection and Safeguarding is up to date and of a consistently high standard, within their organisation.

Follow-up activities and support

This course is a great opportunity to share information and experiences with other professionals. An integral part of the course is group work and dicussion with other delegates. The pace of the day will depend upon the knowledge of your group.
