Catch Up® Literacy is suitable for all struggling readers whose Reading Age is significantly below their Chronological Age. Designed for use with struggling readers aged 6-14, rather than beginner readers. Struggling readers on Catch Up® Literacy make twice the normal rate of progress.

Evidence underpinning this approach

Catch Up® Literacy has been shown to help struggling learners achieve more than double the progress of typically developing learners (all the more impressive as struggling learners make far less progress than typically developing learners).

Learners (aged 6 - 14) who received Catch Up® Literacy support for an average of 7 months achieved an average Reading Age gain of about 19 months. (Data for 3,134 learners from 27 local authorities, 2010. As reported in Early intervention to prevent long-term literacy difficulties: the case of Catch Up®  Literacy

Learners in Years 7 - 10 who received Catch Up® Literacy support for an average period of 8.3 months made average Reading Age gains of 16.7 months - a mean ratio gain of 2.01. (As reported in Catch Up® in Secondary Schools.)

Case study evidence of improvement in the behaviour of learners who become more willing to engage with the whole school curriculum.

How users/participants can evaluate success

Trainees

Trainees have the opportunity to submit for the OCN Catch Up® Literacy qualification

To gain the OCN Catch Up® Literacy qualification, trainees have to submit written evidence to show that they have successfully completed the assignments for each of the three Units. The assignments for Units 1 and 3 are mostly completed as part of the training. The assignments for Unit 2 are based on the delivery of the Catch Up® Literacy intervention to learners.

Each Unit takes approximately 5 hours to complete (which includes time spent on the training courses). NB Whilst the assignments are an integral part of the course, submitting them for OCN assessment is voluntary.

The cost of registration for the OCN Catch Up® Literacy qualification is included in the cost of the Catch Up® Literacy training.

Struggling Learners

Each individual Catch Up® session gives you valuable information about the learner’s needs and progress.

We also recommend that learners on Catch Up® Literacy are further assessed:

  • using the Catch Up® Literacy assessments for learning at the beginning and end of the intervention
  • using the standardised reading test used in the initial assessments at the mid-point and end of the year, as appropriate

Follow-up activities and support

Between each Delivering Catch Up® Literacy session (PART 2 (L2)), the trainees complete short follow-up tasks and practise the Catch Up® Literacy skills.

The ‘Review and next steps’ session (half day) (PART 4 (L4)) gives opportunities to review Catch Up® practice with colleagues and gives further guidance.
