Description Free to students - All students must book their place here - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/W553RHK (under 16's must be accompanied by a responsible adult). Our second D&T Futures lecture comes to you from Dick Powell, co-founder of internationally renowned design and innovation company Seymourpowell. Dick is also the current Chairman of D&AD, and has twice been its President. Dick has appeared on numerous radio and television programmes alongside business partner Richard Seymour, and has sat on the boards of the Design Council, the Design Business Association, the D&AD Executive, Samsung’s International Design Advisory board and Singapore Design Council’s Advisory Board . With over 30 years experience, Dick Powell believes passionately that design is not just about being different or more stylish, but about being better - better for people, better for business and better for the world. Dick and Richard took this idea to television, making 12 programmes for Channel 4 (Equinox, Designs on Your..., and Better by Design) that followed the development of new products, from the genesis of new ideas through to their realisation. They brought fresh thinking to kitchen bins, razors, burglar alarms, the economy airline seat and the all-important shopping trolley. Most famously perhaps was the design of a bra for the bigger bust, and for an innovative toilet. Dick believes passionately in the role of creative people of all disciplines in shaping our future, and particularly in the intimate relationship between innovation and design to create things which are Better by Design. Dick will be talking about Designing Innovation The notion that design is something you get into only after you have dreamt up and proven out your idea is deeply embedded in most businesses, and indeed within consumers (this latter fuelled by the numerous ‘make-over’ programmes on TV). Sometimes it has to be that way. Less understood is the powerful role design (and design thinking) plays in originating new ideas for businesses, and particularly in bringing focus and relevance to innovative concepts through understanding . . . • that reality and idea are utterly inseparable • that inspiration is more valuable than perspiration • that foresight is as important as insight • and that observation can be more helpful than information. So how do designers think and how can businesses create a climate for creative thinking and for fostering innovative ideas? These issues are explored, unpacked and liberally illustrated with examples and anecdotes – from bras and toilets, to vehicles and appliances.
