Description This course will develop teachers’ understanding of how to teach children to write high quality non-fiction texts for meaningful purposes and audiences. It will develop participants’ understanding of the statutory requirements and raised expectations for writing in the new National Curriculum. The course will support teachers to understand a range of key strategies to ensure raised attainment in writing. It will focus on: • Raising expectations for the teaching of grammar and how to apply this learning into writing non-fiction • How to use a quality text to impact upon engagement; develop writing skills; provide purpose and audience for non-fiction writing • Subject knowledge and progression in non-fiction – how to build on learning across the year and across a key stage • Developing cross-curricular writing to ensure application of skills, with an emphasis on improving the quality of writing across the curriculum. Delegates will be provided with a free copy of the key children’s book used on the course, PowerPoint hand-out, a CD of resources, refreshments and a buffet lunch.

Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students Teachers in Year 5 and 6 will be able to plan, teach and assess using the new National Curriculum. They will know how the use of quality texts, application of basic skills including grammar and vocabulary and speaking and listening will raise attainment in writing a full range of non-fiction text types. They will know how to ensure that children acquire the knowledge needed for the Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Tests at the end of KS2 and also apply this knowledge in creative writing to ensure sufficient evidence for end of KS2 assessments.
