The EAL Pocketbook will help teachers build on their learners' skills and strengths, making learning cognitively challenging and moving students towards independent learning. EAL pupils are learning English as an additional language, not as a replacement for their first language – there are cognitive advantages to being bilingual, but only if both languages continue to be developed. The EAL Pocketbook presents a range of practical approaches and strategies that teachers can use in their everyday lessons – supporting EAL learners to develop their English, but to also provide opportunities for them to use and learn their first language.
