This one-day course, suitable for leaders across the school, provides the information and activities you need to understand the purpose of appraisal and the role of the appraiser.

  • Understand the current guidance and context of performance management.
  • Develop the skills to lead the performance management process in a professional manner.
  • Feel equipped for evidence-based reviews and setting appropriate objectives.
  • Learn how to develop effective criteria for linking pay, progression and performance.
  • Explore how a culture of positive performance management can enhance the outcomes of all learners.

You will experience how to develop an ongoing process that will manage performance; one that focuses on helping your staff to improve their day-to-day performance; monitoring and evidencing their progress throughout the year.

We also explore how to provide honest feedback through structured conversations, without damaging working relationships or postponing those difficult discussions.

Evidence underpinning this approach

Our training is based on our Path to Success methodology, developed by our Head of Education, David Maytham, which is centered on talk-led, active and collaborative approaches to learning. Our methodology is grounded in the latest primary educational research from influential theorists such as Piaget, Dienes, Vygotsky, Skemp and Bruner. The Path to Success methodology promotes practical, fun and acheivable teaching methods and makes our first-hand experience of current teaching of real children in the primary classroom accessible to all. 

Our methods have been actively used in the classroom and have been found to have a significant effect on the teaching of writing and children’s progress. We have received outstanding feedback, with 97% of people attending our training rating it as excellent.

How users/participants can evaluate success

Success of our course is immediately evaluated by delegates through an evaluation form, this gives people attending the course the opportunity to rate their experience of the course and the trainer. It also gives people the opportunity to provide comment on what they liked about the course and what thought needed changing. Following the course, success can be evaluated by comparing your experience in the classroom after implementing the ideas and practices from our course and comparing these experiences with the objectives of the course. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have our ideas helped to create a writing climate in your classroom?
  • Are you delivering high quality teaching of poetry and narrative writing?
  • Has the composition and effect of children’s writing improved in your class?
  • Are the games and activities we taught you supporting you to deliver high quality teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation?
  • Have our methods and strategies led to all children making rapid progress?

You will be provided with a delegate pack on the day which includes a range of resources that will support your activities following your attendance on our course. We also have online resources and a book list that can be used in conjunction with our training, this is available by request following attendence on a course.
