The session covers legal requirements and some aspects of best practice. There is specific focus on the governing body's understanding of the distinction between strategic and operational tasks. There is also an opportunity to explore what it means to challenge and when courageous conversations should be held.

The course draws on NGA's expertise in governance policy and practice. It is up to date with the latest Department of Education guidance on governance.

The course should allow the governing body to do its work with renewed focus and understanding of their role.
|Follow-up activities and support||
The NGA offer a range of consultancy and training services which could be used to follow up or complement this session.
This is a two hour session delivered to the governing body in school at a time and date to suit. The consultant will liaise with the chair and the head to ensure that any issues specific to the governing body can be incorporated into the course.
