Description The purpose of this session is to increase governors' knowledge and awareness of staff appraisal and how staff are performance managed in schools.

The session covers:

  • The legal position
  • The principles of appraisal, teacher standards, and objective setting
  • Performance management
  • Performance related pay

It also looks at the governing body's role in determining the appraisal and pay policy, monitoring it's application and evaluating effectiveness.

Governors will have the opportunity to share knowledge gained from other sectors and discuss their experience of the process so far.

Following the session, governors should be equipped to successfully ensure that staff appraisal and performance management is carried out effectively at their school.

The session is usually two hours long and delivered to the whole governing body at a time and place to suit. Prior to the session, the consultant will liaise with the Chair of Governors and Headteacher to ensure that the focus matches the school's current position in relation to this complex aspect of school management.
