|Description||This is a tutored online course aimed at teachers and teaching assistants who need practical help in meeting the needs of a pupil (or pupils) with hearing impairment. It assumes no prior knowledge of hearing impairment, but is also suitable for SEN specialists with some prior knowledge. It involves the setting of goals and interventions for the young person with whom you are working, and an evaluation of the effectiveness of these interventions. It can either be delivered through our associate tutor network, or organisations can purchase a multi-user licence. The course is delivered as part of the NatSIP training pathway, and online tutors are qualified teachers of the deaf.|

|Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students||
This course consists of an introduction to hearing impairment, the assessment of pupils with hearing impairment, and evidence based interventions which have been shown to be effective with children and young people with hearing impairment. Video case studies are provided, and participants are expected to plan 3 SMART goals and implement 3 interventions to achieve these goals. 90 days after course completion they are asked to report back on the outcomes they have achieved.
|Evidence underpinning this approach||
The course content has been written by qualified teachers of the hearing impaired, and is approved by NatSIP. We have ample evidence of the impact and effectiveness of this course, both quantitative from the Goal Attainment Scaling used to assess pupils’ outcomes, and qualitative from participant feedback on the online forums incorporated into the course.

The course provides direct evidence of impact on pupil outcomes through the Goal Attainment Scaling model which is integral to it.
|Follow-up activities and support||
Online forums are integral to the course, and these provide the opportunity to establish online communities of learning. Participants have ongoing access to the course material and we know that 95% refer back to it after completion. There are a large number of resources within the course, many from external providers, and these and the course content are continually refreshed and updated.
The course normally involves an initial face to face session to introduce participants to the online interface, although this can be done remotely. Participants are then tutored through the 3 main sections of the course and expected to contribute to online forum discussion relating to each section. Video material is interspersed throughout the course, and there are quizzes in each section.
At the end of the assessment section participants are expected to set 3 SMART goals for the young person they are working with, and at the end of the interventions section they are asked to identify the interventions to achieve these goals. They then have 90 days to implement these interventions and to report back using Goal Attainment Scaling.
