Taking a coaching approach to leading learning in schools

Programme aims:

To develop staff who can integrate a coaching approach effectively across a range of situations within the school environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will have gained an understanding of coaching style
  • They will have undertaken practice in their own working context, whether with pupils, teams or colleagues
  • Coaching practice will be logged and evaluated to enable participants to reflect upon the impact of coaching style on learning
  • Coaching practice will be used as a basis of the endorsed assessment process and accreditation with ILM

Assessment for Endorsed Award

This programme requires some formal school based assessment including 4 hours of using a coaching approach, a reflective dairy and a personal statement

Evidence underpinning this approach

Coaching and mentoring has become a major tool in schools, but is often delivered as a brief instructional programme without any real immersion in practice.  Courses that are endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management are grounded in tried and tested practice and well-established criteria for assessment and evaluation.  The quality of these courses is based on a rigorous approach to coaching practice, shared in the form of peer-coaching and logged reflection to build case-studies of personal practice leading to the evaluation of impact on others’ learning.

How users/participants can evaluate success
  1. Through logged coaching practice, shared with peers and evaluated through reflection and impact
  2. Through the assessed work submitted for accreditation
  3. Through personal evaluation of impact on learning, either in the classroom, with colleagues and through changed behaviours.
Follow-up activities and support

There will be an expectation of undertaking reading and coaching practice between sessions

The assessed work will be completed after the course, reflecting on continued practice

Participants will be able to consider furthering their learning and practice through higher levels of ILM awards and courses.
