Stated learning outcomes for this course

This programme supports primary school teachers to:

  • Understand the evidence in this area and the factors underpinning success
  • Develop a profile based on the characteristics and achievement of boys in their school
  • Develop an action plan, with strategies for action research  
  • Sow the seeds for a learning culture based on what works for all learners
  • Implement an approach which reaches beyond the classroom

The programme takes place over three sessions spread across two terms.

Day 1   

  • Research findings on the gender gap and busting surrounding myths
  • Introduction to action research project
  • Breakdown of methodology, evaulation and expectations of the projec
  • Barriers to boy's literacy and effective strategies to overcome these

Day 2   

  • Identify the main focus area for the research and enquiry
  • The underlying causes of the key areas impacting boys' literacy
  • Tools for success: Pedagogy for engaging pupils
  • Developing an action plan

Day 3  

  • Participant led sharing of learning, development and findings
  • Parental engagement: importance, potential barriers, and ways to strengthen it
  • Support and resources available with your National Literacy Trust Membership
