Description This course is designed to help participants develop a consistent whole school approach to the teaching of poetry in reading, writing and the spoken word. The expectations for each year group will be explored and candidates will be given appropriate games and activities that can be used with and across year groups. The course looks at ways in which schools can ensure effective teaching of poetry, meeting the National Curriculum requirements.

By the end of the course participants will:

  • have guidance on the end of year expectations for poetry in the Primary School.
  • have appropriate ideas, games and activities they can use in school tomorrow to teach poetry.
  • be knowledgeable of author studies to teach poetry.
  • be able to develop the use of poetry across the whole school curriculum.
  • develop an awareness of up-to-date resources for teaching poetry in the Primary School.

How we evaluate the training:


• Participants evaluate the training based upon the relevance to professional needs, the quality of the tuition, the quality of the training material, and the organisation, management and accommodation.
• Delegates identify further training requirements
•  Follow up questionnaires are sent to delegates asking for feedback over time.
• A track record is maintained for each course and for each tutor. Feedback and evaluation is shared with tutors in order to identify and inform development.

Following attendance on a course, all delegates are welcome to contact the main office with any questions and queries relating to the training and its application within school.

For most courses, tailored follow up consultancy services, coaching and mentoring  are available but these are at a separate cost. For quotations, delegates should contact the main office as discounts are available.

Tutor:

Claire is an experienced primary literacy and numeracy consultant, a moderator and an experienced deputy head, Key Stage Leader and teacher. Claire has worked as a consultant for national strategies for two local authorities and is a current serving practitioner. Claire specialises in supporting teachers in English assessment, planning, and teaching. As party of tailored consultancy and training, Claire is able to provide demonstration lessons.  
Claire is passionate about improving the teaching of literacy in Primary Schools and delivering lively, valuable training to enable teachers to deliver first class literacy for all children. She understands the challenges faced by teachers and provides many practical activities, games and resources that can be used immediately within the classroom
