Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students

Trainees will:

  • Gain an overview of the Catch Up® Numeracy intervention
  • Gain an overview of the implementation, delivery and management of the intervention

Trainees have the opportunity to book the Catch Up® Numeracy Integrated training and resource package. The 4 part package consists of:• Introducing Catch Up® Numeracy• Delivering Catch Up® Numeracy• Managing Catch Up® Numeracy• Review and next steps.

Catch Up® Numeracy is suitable for all struggling learners whose Reading Age is significantly below their Chronological Age. Designed for use with struggling learners aged 6-14, rather than beginner learners. Struggling learners on Catch Up Numeracy make twice the normal rate of progress.

Evidence underpinning this approach

Catch Up® Numeracy has been shown to help struggling learners achieve more than double the progress of typically developing learners (all the more impressive as struggling learners make far less progress than typically developing learners).

Learners aged 6 - 11 who received Catch Up® Numeracy support for an average period of 5 months achieved average Number/Maths Age gains of 11 months (Data for 348 learners. Journal article awaiting publication - further information from Catch Up on request.)

Learners in Years 7 - 10 who received Catch Up® Numeracy support for an average period of 5 months achieved average Number/Maths Age gains of 15 months (a mean ratio gain of 3.0).

How users/participants can evaluate success

Struggling Learners

Each individual Catch Up® session gives you valuable information about the learner’s needs and progress.

We also recommend that learners on Catch Up® Numeracy are further assessed:

  • using the Catch Up® Numeracy assessments for learning at the beginning and end of the intervention
  • using the standardised reading test used in the initial assessments at the mid-point and end of the year, as appropriate

Trainees who undertake the Catch Up® Numeracy Integrated training and resource package have the opportunity to submit for the OCN Catch Up® Numeracy qualification

To gain the OCN Catch Up® Numeracy qualification, trainees have to submit written evidence to show that they have successfully completed the assignments for each of the three Units. The assignments for Units 1 and 3 are mostly completed as part of the training. The assignments for Unit 2 are based on the delivery of the Catch Up® Numeracy intervention to learners.

Each Unit takes approximately 5 hours to complete (which includes time spent on the training courses). NB Whilst the assignments are an integral part of the course, submitting them for OCN assessment is voluntary.

The cost of registration for the OCN Catch Up® Numeracy qualification is included in the cost of the Catch Up® Numeracy training.
