Description Thursday 18 January (9.30am to 3.30pm) Thursday 1 February (9.30am to 3.30pm) This two-part* interactive course will help you develop and support your planning and practice for effective guided reading. This course will focus from Year 2 upwards but is applicable for both KS1 & KS2 as the principles of text comprehension apply across all ages, even into adulthood. * The two sessions do ‘stand alone’ but there are a number of overlapping elements. Effective guided reading: Theory and practice

  • Observation of a demonstration lesson; Linking practice to theory: Investigating the psychological processes involved in text comprehension; Linking practice to research: Evidence-based strategies to support text comprehension.

 

Thursday 1 February 2018 - Part 2: 9.30am to 3.30pm

Unlocking the potential of texts

  • The process of monitoring understanding: How children sense of texts in unique ways; Investigating the concept of text potential: Working with fiction and non-fiction texts; The role of talk in teaching reading: dialogic practices.
