Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students

Combining expert opinion and a real sense of how we all feel and behave differently in the open air, this day supports staff in harnessing the outdoor space at your school and considering three main ways that it can be utilised:

  • as somewhere to take a ‘normal’ indoor lesson at any time, provided you have all the right resources to hand;
  • as a fantastic resource in itself which can be used as inspiration for planning any number of curriculum learning areas;
  • and as the perfect setting for our learning trails, which stir a real sense of adventure in pupils and can be endlessly adapted.
Evidence underpinning this approach

The 2008 Ofsted report, Learning Outside the Classroom: How Far Should You Go? commented that “learning outside the classroom is a tried and tested method of organised schooling ... when planned and implemented well (it) contributed significantly to raising standards and increasing pupils’ personal, social and emotional development.” This programme has been designed to support you in planning structured and purposeful ways of developing your outdoor spaces as centres for active learning.

How users/participants can evaluate success

Staff will step into the outdoor shoes of the pupils they teach for the day and take part in the activities as the children would before taking some time for some facilitated planning and sharing. By the end of the day all participants will have a shared ‘bank’ of brilliant outdoor activities, ready to deliver to their pupils the very next day.

Our most popular Learning Outside the Classroom INSET's include; Outdoor Maths and Storytelling Scenes.

Follow-up activities and support

This CPD day provides opportunity for planning activites that can be implemented into lessons the very next day! furthermore, you will receive a toolkit containing the approaches explored on the training course.

“An absolutely superb INSET – thank you for your professionalism, knowledge and excellent interpersonal skills” Teacher, Sudley Junior School

“Very interactive and mixing teams for each activity kept everyone on track. The team were really motivated and this will provide a great springboard for the start of term.” (Headteacher, Oaklands Primary)
