Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students

Do you teach capable pupils who require more stretch than your core curriculum offers?

Are you seeking ideas and approaches that will inspire them to go further with Mathematics?

Are you looking to enrich your lessons and enjoy teaching the most capable pupils?

This course will tackle some of the fundamental aspects of problem solving in Mathematics and visit many of the common skills used to help in making your classroom a place where ideas and mathematical thinking can flourish. Whether preparing pupils for scholarship or simply seeking to enrich the mathematical experience of your able pupils, this course will provide new ideas, resources and approaches that will inspire!

Evidence underpinning this approach

This Course Aims to:

  • Teachers equipped with the skills to coach the most capable pupils in Mathematics.
  • Develop curious learners with the confidence to tackle challenging problems.
  • Take an open-ended approach to Mathematics.
  • Take a fresh perspective on common skills in Mathematics.
How users/participants can evaluate success
Course Outline:

A Fresh Approach To Teaching & Learning Mathematics
  • Where to start with a problem solving classroom
  • Teachers as Learners – sharing the excitement through joining your pupils in discovering new aspects to familiar topics!
  • Hands-on Mathematics – exploring practical problems and making the step towards general principles
  • Allowing topics to be open-ended - give your pupils the freedom to explore through “low threshold, high ceiling” activities.
Common Topics and Key Skills for Strong Mathematicians
  • Developing Curiosity and Excitement
  • Optimus Primes – they’re everywhere! Learning how primes form the building blocks of number and exploiting their uses in problem solving.
  • Algeb-rithmetic – linking topics and skills. Often pupils progress from number work to algebra but less often make the step back to see how algebraic techniques can be powerful tools for numerical calculations.
  • Combinatorics – a topic for the entire school age spectrum. Looking at problems involving ordering and probability.
Investigations
  • A scaffold – The 3 Stages of Investigations
  • A Pythagorean series – an every year topic with some hidden discoveries.
  • Some favourite investigations and the final step
  • Getting Connected - Finding Problem Solving Resources and Subject Development for Teachers
