Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students

With much greater emphasis being placed on the broader curriculum, linked directly to creating a ‘knowledge-rich’ focus, the needs of our more able pupils will need to be re-addressed. In the past it was about providing them with tasks from the next sub-level. However, now the challenge is to create activities from within the same objective that requires deeper thinking and reasoning. The training aims to provide you with practical ideas in doing this across the science and non-core subjects.

This half-day training is aiming to consider the subtle, but important, differences to be considered when challenging our able pupils.

The training will consider the following issues:

  • How do we go about challenging bright pupils when there is no exemplification of ‘greater depth’ for science and non-core subjects?
  • How do provide the right level on a lesson-by-lesson basis?
  • How do we ensure that we are deepening the thinking and reasoning of more able pupils within ‘whole-class’ teaching?
  • How can we do all this within a framework of a ‘knowledge-rich’ curriculum?
  • What part does questioning, reflecting and presenting have within this process?
  • How do we go about creating champion groups to challenge our able pupils?
  • How can we use ‘knowledge-organisers/ mats to support the process?
  • How do we go about enriching the vocabulary for these able pupils? (‘Vocabulary size is related to academic success, and schooling is crucial for increasing the breadth of pupils’ vocabulary’ – Amanda Spielman 2018)
