Course objectives:

  • Overview of  the principles underpinning the teaching of systematic synthetic phonics
  • Develop confidence and competence with Phonics Bug
  • Be able to carry out high-quality assessments to track progress in reading
  • Formulate catch-up sessions for children needing them


This is a full-day course, from 9:00am to 3:30pm, covering the following areas:

  • Getting to know Phonics Bug: a whistle-stop tour
  • What does a Phonics Bug Phoneme lesson look like?
  • Rehearsing phonics lessons and phoneme delivery
  • Phonics Bug decodable readers and online eBooks
  • What does a Phonics Bug Language lesson look like?
  • Assessment and devising a phonics catch-up programme
  • Summing up with a reading activity
  • Q & A session
