|Categories||Primary, Secondary, Leadership and Management, Headteacher, In school, Governor, Governance|
|Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students||
The aim of the course is to ensure that the governance framework is thoroughly reviewed, thus ensuring that the school benefits from a governing board that is skilled, committed and fully fit for purpose. The session includes a presentation on the current context for governance, working through the NGA's eight elements of effective governance, guidance on down-sizing and changes to membership categories, and advice on next steps.
|Evidence underpinning this approach||
The course draws on the NGA's expertise in governance policy and practice. It is up to date with the legal requirements surrounding governing board reconstitution.
|How users/participants can evaluate success||
It is good practice for all governing boards to review their constitution from time to time. However, unless they are already constituted under the 2012 regulations, all local authority maintained governing bodies are now required to reconstitute by September 2015. Following this session, governing boards will be prepared to start the process of reconstitution positively.
|Follow-up activities and support||
The NGA offers a range of support, advice, and training services which can be used to follow up or complement this course.
This is a three hour session delivered to the whole governing board by an experienced consultant at a time and place to suit. Prior to the session, the consultant will liaise by phone with both the Chair of Governors and the Headteacher to ensure that the session is bespoked to the school's circumstances.
