|Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students||
Opportunity to learn about the work of 2 schools who were early adopters of the A+ Family Advocacy School Toolkit (FA+STKit) from Gap Education which helped "turnaround" some of the most challenging pupils in these schools.
|Evidence underpinning this approach||
The A+ programme has been developed over the past 2 years by former Headteacher Quentin Gunderson. It is built on the theory of change that if you can establish greater well-being, resilience and aspiration in the home (where children spend the majority of their time), then you can dramatically affect outcomes in school.
Research by Save the Children in 2012 pointed to an 80% variability in school outcomes dependant on circumstances beyond the school gates. However, over 90% of the pupil premium is spent on changing things inside school. Furthermore, Professor Charles DesForges' research concluded that where parents are involved with their childrens' education, attainment increases by 15% regardless of Socio-Economic Background. The research of Stephen Gorard and others has also found that the 2 most important factors of parental attitudes and behaviours are the extent to which Schools are engaged with Parents and also the extent to which Parents are engaged with the learning activities of their children.
The A+ programme is a unique 4 phase approach to Parental Engagement for pupil premium families. It is being used in schools from North Yorkshire to the West Country. Currently there is a high engagement rate of 81% and a 89% positive outcome rate of success.
