Leading from the middle has long been recognised as an important strategy for improving and raising whole school standards. Through innovation, leadership and strategies based on classroom practice, subject leaders in primary school are vital to ensuring that a broad and balanced curriculum. This includes ensuring that key skills are taught, meaningful links between subjects are made and literacy, numeracy and SMSC are embedded across the curriculum.

Understand key functions of a subject leader.
Ability to analyse whole school curriculum coverage and identify gaps.
Make case for change to SLT and governors.
Write effective subject leader reports and action plans.
Conduct planning and book scrutinies confidently.
