Evidence underpinning this approach
  • Strategies recommended in the training have been tried and tested by the author himself with staff in his school.
  • Training activities also draw on the pupil premium toolkit research. For example, the second training session explores the use of feedback and metacognition in the classroom.
How users/participants can evaluate success
  • An evaluation form is provided with the pack.
  • At the end of each training session, suggestions are provided for evaluating 'what's changed?'. These range from informal approaches (e.g. talking to participants after the session to find out how they are getting on with their identified actions) to embedding new systems (e.g. using team meetings to follow up on use of the student passport)  and gathering data from students.
Follow-up activities and support
  • For each training session, suggestions are provided for follow up actions to put strategies into practice. For example, participants of Training session 1 are asked to trial the agreed student passport template and feed back at the following session.
  • An additional resources section provides a template and cover sheet for a teaching assistant development record.
Details

The pack contains three training sessions of 60-90 minutes duration, ideal for use in twilight training. Presentations and handouts are all provided with the pack, as well as video clips to stimulate discussion.

Training session 1 – Practicalities of classroom partnerships

Learning outcomes

  • Develop new, more effective ways for planning and record keeping.
  • Understand data better and how to share information as part of the learning partnership.
  • Consider the Student Passport and how it can directly support learning and understanding within the partnership.
  • Explore further professional development opportunities.

Training session 2 - Effective Strategies for Improving Learning

Learning outcomes

  • Explore further uses of the Student Passport and decide how to put this tool into practice.
  • Consider effective support strategies for helping students make progress, focusing particularly on:
  • developing greater independence through improving metacognition
  • providing better feedback.
  • Agree key principles for successful partnership learning in your school.

Training session 3 – A whole-school approach

Learning outcomes

  • Explore the role of positive messages and positive language in building a partnership ethos.
  • Use visual supports as a practical tool for supporting learners.
  • Consider how cross-school projects and partnerships can enhance student learning.
