Stated learning outcomes for this course

Philosophical enquiries are pupil-led and introduce the process of dialogue, and foster:

  • complex reasoning (critical and creative thinking), such as formulation and analysis of arguments (justification, coherence and consistency)
  • higher-order thinking skills including second-order/meta-level thinking, revaluation and rethinking
  • conceptual analysis and abstract thinking that deepens understanding across all subjects.

The combination of these skills will also develop far higher levels of oracy and language for communication, which will impact positively on children’s writing outcomes. These skills also promote autonomous learning and have increased achievement according to national curriculum levels, as recorded in classes The Philosophy Foundation (TPF) have previously worked with. As this is a whole-class approach children from across the learning spectrum benefit as it develops meta-level thinking and peer-to-peer learning. G&T benefit from being challenged, and those children who are usually seen as low-achievers, or SEN are able to gain confidence and skills through the programme. As the project is based on dialogue, speaking and listening skills are developed and can also aid EAL students.

Teachers will be provided with a copy of The If Odyssey at the beginning of the project. This is a training book that includes stories, session plans and extension activities for teachers. The book, together with the specialist philosophy teacher’s work, will teach the art of storytelling, enquiry facilitation and the development of children's reasoning skills. Teachers will benefit from learning questioning and enquiry techniques that can be applied across the curriculum. By running the sessions themselves towards the end of the project, as well as receiving one-to-one feedback and support from the specialist philosophy teacher, teachers will also be able to run The If Odyssey with their classes in the future, making this a very sustainable piece of training.
