|Description||This branch training session and resource addresses ways in which design can be taught in the classroom using biomimicry. Biomimicry is one way of problem solving and generating innovative design ideas or systems and can be used in conjunction with many other design activities. It provides teachers with an industrial context and examples of the use of biomimicry in textiles, product design, engineering, food packaging and food production.|
|Learning outcomes for participants/users and, where relevant, pupils or students||
Cats, sharks, spiders, leaves…. Nature has inspired designers for years but how has it been used and why now, is it more important than ever in our developing technological world?
“Learning from nature” can be used in two ways within Design and Technology departments.
• Using natural forms as inspiration for shapes and structures
• Understanding how natural phenomenon can be re-invented through technology to solve problems – often in the form of engineered new materials.
This resource will explain how biomimicry has been used by looking at key examples from textiles, product design, engineering and food. Learning to look, drawing from stimulus materials and linking this to CAD/CAM will enable pupils to move away from stereotypical outcomes and begin to develop more original designs and products.
The slides in the presentation contain useful images and websites to engage pupils and provide them with the opportunity for further research. To accompany this, is a teacher’s guide which includes a guide to the presentation alongside suggested links for further resources to support their delivery of biomimicry in the classroom.
