Stated learning outcomes for this course

The course was written for teachers, but should provide information for anyone concerned with the progress of students.

Lasting for no longer than a few seconds, working memory is a key factor in learning. After years of research it is claimed that a student's working memory capacity is a reliable predictor of his academic attainment. Working memory has two parts to its system, auditory and visual. The verbal / phonological loop is the auditory aspect while the visual - spatial sketchpad is the visual aspect. Working memory is when the student receives information and processes it / 'works it' in some way in order to carry out a task.

The good news is that students can improve their working memory capacity, albeit that the capacity of working memory varies from person to person. Strategies can be learned and practised to help students in all areas of their schooling. Astute teachers build in working memory practice opportunities to topics and stages that their students are at. Those working individually with students have a powerful opportunity to hone working memory skills and empower learning across the board.

At the end of the course participants will have a framework of how working memory impacts on learning a foundational platform on which to extend and individualise strategies to nurture working memory.
